HISTORY

It all started when…

...A group of parents met to discuss the possibility of creating a cooperative nursery school in Yorktown Heights. This was back in September of 1947. A month later, a public meeting was held and parents actively began to form a new school.

In March 1948, thanks to the involvement of local parents, YCNS officially opened. In the fall of 1950, YCNS was chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York. In 1988, YCNS became an accredited school. We're one of the only preschools in Westchester to be accredited by the New York State Department of Education, and we're pretty proud of it!

With the continued involvement and support of families in the Yorktown area, YCNS has grown from a one-group, one-teacher school housed in temporary quarters to its present status as a cooperative school with five groups, 74 students, five staff and its own building.

For over 75 years, YCNS has provided area children with their first educational experience outside the home. Over the years, many people have given themselves to keep the original dream going, and we're committed to ensuring YCNS is around to nurture and teach generations to come.
